About The Course

Legionnaires' disease is the most serious of a group of diseases caused by types of bacteria (Legionella pneumophila). It is contracted by inhaling tiny water droplets that are contaminated with the bacteria and cause infection. The result of exposure can lead to lung infections with flu-like symptoms which in certain high risk groups can lead to serious - sometimes fatal - health implications.

All premises where water is stored or distributed are at risk of Legionella exposure. It can be caught from air conditioning systems, spa pools, hot tubs, showers, taps and toilets (this list is not exhaustive) which is why employers, landlords and duty holders have a responsibility to assess the risk from water and where appropriate, put adequate controls in place as part of their compliance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).

Aims of the course

To enable dutyholders and those responsible for implementing management controls to better understand the hazards, risks and compliance associated with water systems and to appreciate their legal responsibilities and understand the consequences of failing to comply with legislation and guidance.

Who is it for?

The course is aimed at any employer, manager or employee who needs a general awareness concerning Legionella proliferation in typical environments, health effects, the controls that can be used to manage the risk of exposure and dutyholders' responsibilities.
